Chauncey Hugh Stigand (1877–1919) was a British army officer, colonial administrator and big game hunter. He was killed in action while attempting to suppress a rebellion of Aliab Dinka. Theodore Roosevelt wrote that "Captain Stigand is one of the most noted of
recent African big game hunters and explorers, and he is also a field naturalist of unusual powers. ... Captain Stigand has written a book which ought to appeal to every believer in vigor and hardihood, to every lover of wilderness adventure, and to every man who values at their proper worth the observations of an excellent field naturalist."

Hunting the Elephant in Africa and Other Recollections of Thirteen Years' Wanderings eBook Chauncy Hugh Stigand

Stigand lived in an exciting era of Africa's history and he certainly carved out an interesting place in the history of hunters and adventurers in Africa. His stories are very interesting as he was an astute observer. Seeing beyond just the hunt recording a great deal of information about the animals and people of Africa. A great way to travel to an Africa that is long gone in the comfort of your favorite chair. The next time you are out hunting and have to climb a steep path to get where you need to be. Remember the tales of running after elephant with a very heavy rifle, far from civilization where a small mistake could kill you. No helicopter medevac, no GPS if your tracker got lost or stepped on in the up close encounters with Africa's deadliest inhabitants.

Hunting the Elephant in Africa and Other Recollections of Thirteen Years' Wanderings eBook Chauncy Hugh Stigand Reviews

Detailed memoir of a bygone era when men like the author helped to open Africa up to the rest of the world.
Old Chauncey Hugh was quite a fellow but you wouldn't really get it from this book. He's not what you call a great story teller (a trait shared with many of these early African explorers). It's more of a journal than a tale of adventure. He,with a few exceptions, just chronicles his wanderings. If you really want to get a true & more captivating look at his life Peter Hathaway Capstick covers Stigand and others of the type in one of his books-unfortunately I can't remember the title but any of his books are top-notch reading, you won't mind the search.
interesting
Good reading
Great hunting stories and observations, as well as some insight into what Africa was like in the early 1900's.
So sad to read the destruction of the elephants for ivory. I know it was written in a different time but difficult to listen to the prejudice of the author.
Chauncy Stigands "Hunting the Elephant in Africa" is worth the read if your interested in gaining a deeper understanding of how much has changed, from approximately 100 years ago, in perceptions concerning hunting elephants, rhinos and lions. This book differs from Teddy's Roosevelt's African Game Trails as it goes into interesting detail concerning the natives their cultures and small issues that TR never really explains in his writings. Chauncy does not spin as good as a story as TR, and is more matter of fact concerning most topics but it is still an interesting book on an historic level.

I enjoyed it and have often go back to read different passages.
